Aberdeen embraces Adoption Week with city events

Two special events are being staged in Aberdeen to coincide with national Adoption Week (20-25 November).

An Adoption UK Roadshow at Central Library on Monday (20 November) will be followed by a special screening of the film And Violet at the Beach Ballroom on Thursday, 23 November.

The roadshow will feature presentations from Scotland Adoption Register, Adoption and Fostering Alliance Scotland, Adoption UK and Aberdeen City Council as the host adoption service. It will run from 4-7pm and is open to all.

And Violet is billed as a “coming of age, character driven drama” about an adopted teenage girl’s troubled family relationships. Refreshments will be served after the screening, which begins at 6.30pm, and there will be an opportunity to find out about the services and support provided by Aberdeen City Council.

Cllr John Wheeler, Aberdeen City Council’s convener of the Education and Children’s Services committee, said: “Adoption is an important issue not only in Aberdeen but nationally. Adoption Week will play a vital part in bringing that conversation to the fore, promoting the opportunities there are but also exploring the challenges associated with such an emotive and important topic.

“There are some inspiring stories to share and a great deal of knowledge and expertise will be available to those attending the roadshow and the screening.

“These events will naturally appeal to prospective adopters but we also anticipate newly approved adoptive parents and those who wish to find out more about adoption services in Aberdeen.

“At the heart of adoption is a permanent and lifelong commitment to children who need the love, care, stability and security of a family. It can of course be challenging but our adoptive families speak overwhelmingly about how rewarding they have found the experience.”
