Aberdeen schools win gold in national sports awards

Hazlehead Primary School and Bridge of Don Academy have been recognised with prestigious national awards for innovation and achievement in delivering physical education and extra-curricular sport.

Both schools have achieved the sportscotland Gold School Sport Award - a national initiative designed to encourage schools to continuously improve physical education and sport. The award also encourages sporting links between schools and the communities around them.

Councillor Angela Taylor, Education and Children’s Services Committee Convener, said: “It’s been an amazing few weeks for our schools here in Aberdeen which have been receiving UK wide recognition and prizes in many fields including now physical education.

“It’s a great testament to our investment in children’s education and commitment to providing a varied and enjoyable curriculum across the city. Pupils and staff have really bought in to it and are reaping the benefits. Many congratulations to both Hazlehead School and Bridge of Don Academy for joining our illustrious list of winners”.

Barbara Jones, Head Teacher at Hazlehead School, said: “We are proud recipients of this Gold Award from Sport Scotland. Hazlehead School are hugely committed to physical activity and igniting a love of sport through active involvement within their local community.

“We are hugely committed to working with Active Schools and local sports clubs to raise achievement and attainment among our school community”.

Daphne McWilliam, Head Teacher at Bridge of Don Academy, said: “Our staff and pupils work hard to provide a rich programme of opportunities and activities at all levels. This award means to everyone as it recognises the hard work, dedication and commitment of all those involved to the health and wellbeing of all our young people.”

Stewart Harris, Chief Executive of Sport Scotland said: “I would like to congratulate all of the staff and pupils at Hazlehead School and Bridge of Don Academy for putting physical education and sport at the heart of their school and local community. They should all be extremely proud of this fantastic achievement”.
