Aberdeen set to bring in the New Year in style with Hogmanay celebrations
12 December 2019
If you wanna have a good time this Hogmanay, local residents and visitors alike are invited to bring in the New Year with the ultimate Aberdeen street party – featuring some of Queen’s greatest hits.
Three top-class music acts will perform live on stage at Schoolhill from 9pm, entertaining the crowds before Byron Stirton from Grampian District Pipes and Drums pipes in the New Year set to the backdrop of a firework display.
First to perform at the free non-ticketed event will be a Charlotte Holden, followed by popular Aberdeen indie-pop band The 101 and culminating with Gary Mullen and the Works performing One Night of Queen
Charlotte Holden, the 22-year-old singer songwriter, born on the North Wales coast and now Aberdeen based, takes her influence from the likes of Ben Rector and Taylor Swift to bring original songs and covers to the stage. Charlotte has released four singles in 2019 and plans to write, release and record an EP in 2020.
Continuing the party will be The 101, who have made a name for themselves both locally and nationally since forming in 2017, receiving support from BBC Introducing, BBC Scotland (Single of the Week), CLASH Magazine, NME, and numerous Spotify editorial playlists, including New Music Friday. The band’s early successes have led to them being awarded the ‘Ones to Watch’ at the Pride of Aberdeen Awards in 2017 as well as being listed in Jim Gellatly’s ‘Top Tips for 2018’, alongside Lewis Capaldi, Callum Beattie and Dancing On Tables.
Gary Mullen and the Works will be recreating the look, sound, pomp and showmanship of arguably the greatest rock band of all time with One Night of Queen. Since May 2002, Gary Mullen and the Works have performed throughout the UK, USA, Europe, South Africa and New Zealand to sell-out audiences. The outfit have also twice rocked the prestigious BBC Proms in the Park, in front of an enthusiastic crowd of 40,000.
Aberdeen City Council culture spokesperson Councillor Marie Boulton said: “There is always a great atmosphere in the city centre on Hogmanay. Our free street party is an excellent way to bring in the bells. We look forward to welcoming thousands of people from across the city, throughout the region and further afield to Aberdeen for one of the biggest events on the Scottish social calendar.
"The Hogmanay Celebrations is our last event in our festive schedule and what better way to signal the end of another fantastic Christmas in Aberdeen than with our annual street party.”
Aberdeen City Council encourages partygoers to remember three simple pieces of advice to help ensure everyone enjoys their night out: Wrap up warm, agree somewhere to meet in case you get separated from friends - and look after each other.
