Aberdeen to commemorate MP Jo Cox with Great Get Together event
09 May 2018
Aberdeen councillors today (Wednesday 9 May) approved a proposal to participate in the 2018 Great Get Together event which was inspired by the late MP, Jo Cox.
The proposal was put forward by Councillor Jennifer Stewart, Public Protection Committee Convener and was unanimously accepted by fellow councillors in the committee’s inaugural meeting.
In her proposal Councillor Stewart said: “This committee believes that Jo Cox’s message that ‘we have more in common that which divides us’ has relevance today and demonstrates the spirit that politics and public service should embody”.
The initiative was founded by the family of Mrs Cox who was killed on 16 June 2016 and sees celebratory community events taking place across the UK on the weekend Friday 22 to Sunday 24 June; coinciding with what would have been the MP’s 44th birthday.
Thousands of events the UK are expected to take place in a weekend of community celebrations aimed at bringing people together.
The councillors have asked officers to liaise with the initiative’s organisers on proposals for the Aberdeen event.
