Aberdonians invited to celebrate Queen’s 90th birthday

The City of Aberdeen will take part in the Beacon of Light festivities to mark the Queen’s 90th Birthday tomorrow (Thu 21 April).

As part of a national celebration, members of the public are invited to watch a birthday beacon being lit at 8.30pm in front of the café in Hazlehead Park as “Happy Birthday” is performed by a quintet from the Bon Accord Silver Band.

The Queen will light the first beacon at Windsor Castle followed by over 1,000 beacons being lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK overseas Territories to celebrate this special birthday.

The Lord Provost of Aberdeen George Adam, said: “It’s great to be part of this national celebration to mark Her Majesty’s Birthday, and it’s a wonderful way for us to show how much she is respected and admired here in the North-east of Scotland.”

Members of the Army Cadet Force will also take special beacons to the top of the four highest peaks in the UK:

Ben Nevis – Scotland (1st Battalion Highlanders Army Cadet Force) Mount Snowdon – Wales (Clwyd and Gwynedd Army Cadet Force) Scafell Pike – England (Cumbria Army Cadet Force) Slieve Donard – Northern Ireland (2nd NI Battalion Army Cadet Force)

The City of Aberdeen will also celebrate the Queen’s Official Birthday in June with a special church service at the Kirk of St Nicholas Uniting at 3pm on Sunday 12 June.
