Aberdonians invited to take part in city-wide summer reading challenge

04 June 2019

Aberdeen City Libraries are this summer inviting all Aberdonians to take part in a brand-new summer reading challenge and potentially win prizes.

Aberdeen Reads! is open to everyone and is aimed at people encouraging family and friends to keep reading over the summer holidays. Everyone who takes part will be entered automatically into a prize draw while anyone completing three mini-challenges of more will enter an additional draw.

The challenge is to read for at least 6 minutes every day. All kinds of reading will count; picture books, fiction, non-fiction, e-books, talking books, magazines, news articles…anything that entrants enjoy reading!

Mini-challenges will be issued each week to help participants explore the library and find new things to read. Aberdeen City Libraries’ website and social media will announce the new challenges each Saturday throughout the summer.

In addition, exciting free events will take place in libraries throughout the holidays for families taking part in the challenge.

Councillor John Wheeler, Educational Operational Delivery Convener, said: “This is a wonderful way to encourage reading among people of all ages during the summer holidays as well as bringing friends and families together for an innovative set of challenges.

“Our Aberdeen City Libraries team is renowned for providing events and hosting talks designed to spark the imagination and I’m sure the Aberdeen Reads! challenge will prove to a be a huge hit over the coming months.”

The challenge runs from Friday 5 July to Saturday 24 August. Pre-registration for the challenge will open on Saturday 22 June.
