Advance bookings for city centre waterslide now open

19 September 2016

The online booking facility for the free waterslide in the city centre as part of In Town Without My Car Day is now open.

People are being asked to book time slots in advance of the event which is to take place in Belmont Street on Sunday 25 September, from 10am and the last bookable time is 3.30pm.

Tickets for the free waterslide were snapped up within two hours of going online last year, so people are advised to book as soon as the booking facility is available.

Aberdeen City Council Regeneration and Transport spokesman Councillor Ross Grant said ‘I’m sure the giant 40 metre long waterslide will be popular with both children and adults once again this year.

“Although any unfilled slots will be available on a first come-first served basis on the day itself, I’d highly recommend registering online in advance to ensure you don’t miss out.”

2016 will be the seventh year in a row the city is hosting In Town Without My Car Day, and will again result in the closure to motorised traffic of Schoolhill between Blackfriars Street and Back Wynd, along with Belmont Street and Little Belmont Street.

The free family fun event will also include scaling a climbing wall, riding weird and wonderful bikes, balance bikes and trikes, trying out hands-on experiments and experience stepping inside a giant bubble with Aberdeen Science Centre, watching Aberdeen University Circus Skills Society demonstrating juggling and performance skills, bringing your own bike for a free maintenance check-up, looking at more unusual bikes including a penny farthing and unicycle.

In Town Without My Car Day, sponsored cycle rides and bicycle roadshows are all part of the fun starting on Saturday for European Mobility Week in Aberdeen.

The European Union-backed campaign promotes sustainability and cities are encouraged to take part by signing up to the campaign and pledging to raise awareness by holding events and implementing permanent measures.

Prior to booking, people are advised to read the rules and instructions found in the terms and conditions first to avoid disappointment on the day. Conditions include a minimum age restriction of seven years old and participants must wear appropriate clothing which covers their arms and legs as well as sensible footwear whilst on the slide. Jewellery must also be removed prior to sliding too. A changing area will be available where participants can dry off so don’t forget a towel and spare clothes.

In Town Without My Car is a free event organised by Aberdeen City Council and Getabout as part of the city’s schedule of events for European Mobility Week. The European Union-backed campaign promotes sustainability and cities are encouraged to take part by signing up to the campaign and pledging to raise awareness by holding events and implementing permanent measures.
