Airyhall youngsters take garden’s ducks under their wings

It certainly wasn’t the weather for ducks but pupils from Airyhall School today (Thursday 19 April) learned all about their feathered friends in the spring sunshine at Johnston Gardens.

Around 32 children went along to the popular and beautiful public gardens, famous for winning Britain in Bloom awards on several occasions to learn all about its ducks - and other wildlife and plants - from Aberdeen City Council’s Countryside Ranger Service and gardeners in a special nature lesson.

The youngsters learned all about what the ducks like to eat and will use their new-found knowledge to design signs and messages for the gardens.

The pupils also helped the garden team to put up bird feeders as part of their afternoon’s tuition.

Councillor John Wheeler, Education Operational Delivery Convener, said: “This is a fabulous way for the pupils to learn about and engage with the flora and fauna of the gardens and to put their learning to practical use.

“I’d like to thank our team at Johnston Gardens for their participation in this wonderful project.”
