Appetite for Change challenge aims to highlight food poverty and to raise vital funds
11 October 2017
Community Food Initiatives North East (CFINE) is looking for volunteers to live on just £2-a-day for a week as part of its annual fundraiser Appetite for Change, which aims to raise funds and highlight food poverty in Aberdeen.
Since 2014, year-on-year demand for emergency food parcels has almost tripled at CFINE’s food bank at 2-4 Poynernook Road, Aberdeen. Demand continues to be high, with over 800 food parcels consistently being given out each month, showing the high levels of food insecurity in the city.
The Appetite for Change challenge begins on Monday 16 October to Friday 20 October 2017 with participants allowed only £10 to cover all food and drink over the five-day period.
The Lord Provost of Aberdeen Barney Crockett said: “I would encourage everyone who can to sign up for CFINE’s Appetite for Change challenge of living on just £2 per day for five days or to donate to the campaign. By doing so you will help to raise awareness of food poverty, which is a daily struggle faced by an increasing number of families and individuals. The money raised will go directly towards tackling food poverty and improving the circumstances of vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the North-east.”
CFINE’s chief executive Dave Simmers said: “This campaign is a key fundraiser for CFINE and plays a huge part in raising awareness about food poverty. CFINE continues to see a huge increase in demand for the support and services we offer, including emergency food aid and financial support. Appetite for Change challenges participants to spend a week living on a restricted budget to represent the challenges that others in the city are facing on a day to day basis.”
