Carmen to captivate opera fans at Duthie Park

Duthie Park is set to come alive as Barrie Kosky’s high kicking, high-energy opera Carmen will be broadcast live as part of the Royal Opera House BP Big Screens on Tuesday 2 July.

Bring a picnic and enjoy free culture on your doorstep with friends and families as the opera follows the turbulent relationship of Carmen (Aigul Akhmetshina) and Don José (Bryan Hymel) and features wonderful numbers such as the Habanera, the ‘Flower Song’ and the ‘Toreador’s Song’.

Kicking the evening off at 5.30pm there will be live music from Bon Accord Silver Band, followed by the pre-screening going live at 6.30pm with the curtain up at 7.00pm. The opera will run until approximately 10.20pm.

Aberdeen City Council Culture Spokesperson Councillor Marie Boulton said: “I am delighted that the BP Big Screens are returning once again to Aberdeen this year; it’s great to have this opportunity to enjoy opera for free right on our doorstep and is another addition to the cultural offering in Aberdeen.

“There is always such a wonderful atmosphere in the park, and whether you’re a big fan of opera or if this would be your first experience of it, I would highly recommend everyone bring their picnic blankets and folding chairs to the Duthie Park to enjoy this enchanting evening.”

Picnics and portable seating are welcome in the park but no glassware, knives, cans, barbecues or naked flames are allowed. A selection of hot and cold soft drinks and light snacks will be available to purchase.

The alcohol by-law on drinking in public places will be lifted between 5.00pm and 11.00pm however alcohol can only be consumed on the main grass area of the Duthie Park. Dogs are also welcome at the event but must be kept on a lead and under control at all times.

There will be limited parking at both of the Duthie Park car parks, as well as in the surrounding streets. Parking will be on a strictly first-come-first-serve basis.
