City Council to commemorate International Workers Memorial Day

Aberdeen City Council will host a number of events to support International Workers Memorial Day (IWMD) on Friday 28 April 2017.

International Workers Memorial Day (IWMD) takes place internationally on Friday 28 April each year. Its purpose is to remember those who have died, been injured, or made ill by their work and to reinvigorate the campaign for healthier and safer work.

At 9.30am, in the city’s Duthie Park a flag lowering and wreath laying ceremony will take place. Representatives from the Trade Union Congress (TUC) will represent council employees and Andrew Lawtie, Vice Lord-Lieutenant, will represent the Lord Provost of Aberdeen.

The Lord Provost of Aberdeen George Adam said: “It is important to remember those who have died, been injured or made ill by their work, and to ensure that good health and safety for all workers should be key considerations for all employers.”

Other events on the day include: a health and safety talk for craft workers at 8am; one minute silence across all council buildings at 11am; and a memorial service at 1pm at Persley Walled Garden, Bridge of Don. These events will be attended by council staff and representatives from trade unions.
