Community food growing initiative approved

29 August 2017

A programme for starting a £145,000 community food growing initiative in three regeneration areas of the city was today approved at an Aberdeen City Council committee.

Members of the communities, housing and infrastructure committee unanimously agreed the Community Food Growing Programme including 19 site-specific projects which have been assessed and a further six non-site specific projects considered.

The report to committee said the areas where the project is happening are Torry; Middlefield, Mastrick, Heathryfold, Cummings Park and Northfield; and Seaton, Tillydrone and Woodside.

One project proposal is for a Food Growing Development Officer, employed by CFINE which is the lead organisation in Aberdeen for community food initiatives and a key City Council partner.

The officer will play a vital role to support the City Council, its partners and communities to develop, deliver, monitor and report on the programme. They would also feed into the wider Food Growing Strategy work which the City Council is required to undertake. It is expected that the Council will provide funding for a limited period during which CFINE will also seek to secure additional external funding for the continuation of the post.
