Community group welcomes transfer of former Council depot

A former council depot is being transferred to an Aberdeen community support group looking to expand its activities.

Aberdeen City Council’s City Growth and Resources Committee agreed a Community Asset Transfer (CAT) for the Seaton site, which is no longer needed by Building Services.

Seaton Community Church, a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation, currently operates out of the adjacent Seaton Huts, which are included in the CAT.

The Church’s projects include tackling loneliness, promoting parenting and life skills, and encouraging children to exercise, as well as helping run a hot meals service during school holidays.

Committee Convener and Council Co-Leader Councillor Douglas Lumsden said: “The Seaton Community Church is already working closely with the Council to improve the quality of life for residents.

“A number of current projects and those planned meet the objectives of the Local Outcome Improvement Plan, a shared vision of Aberdeen as a place where everyone can prosper.

“By using surplus Council assets in new ways and supporting the goals of partners like the Seaton Community Church, we can make a real and lasting difference to people across the city.”

The Church has plans to demolish the buildings and construct a purpose-built facility that would allow it to develop its existing programme in the regeneration area.

Pastor Barry Douglas said: “We are just delighted at the news and very grateful to Aberdeen City Council for their vision and support.

“We already run a number of programmes in Seaton and are looking forward to being able to organise and partner with groups across the city to help run even more activities for the people of Seaton.”
