Community spirit blossoms with opening of new garden in Torry

18 May 2018

An Aberdeen community will celebrate the opening of a new wildlife garden and growing space this weekend.

Supported by Aberdeen City Council’s community team and funded with a £30,000 award from the Council to regenerate greenspace, volunteers have helped transform an area of disused land in Torry to create a colourful haven between Tullos Place and Tullos Crescent.

Tomorrow (Saturday, May 19) an event will run from noon to 2pm to mark the occasion. The afternoon is open to all and will include interactive workshops, play sessions and other fun activities.

Cllr John Wheeler, Convener of the Aberdeen City Council Operational Delivery Committee, said: “It’s fantastic to see the hard work coming together and the garden will be a great asset for years to come. The opening is perfectly timed to take advantage of the light nights and good weather, so I’m sure it will be popular in the weeks ahead.

“The Council is really keen to work in partnership with communities to enhance their local areas and make sure that needs are being met. The transformation of this site shows that approach in action and our community staff have worked closely with the volunteers to deliver an excellent project that will appeal to all ages.”

The garden, complete with pathways and carefully planned planting, will feature a learning circle at its heart to enable outdoor sessions for local schools and groups.

Cllr Wheeler added: “Participatory budgeting has supported some fantastic projects across Aberdeen and this an example of how this approach can be used. Residents of Torry have really embraced the opportunity to have a greater say on how money is spent in their community. I’m sure the wildlife garden and growing space will prove to be a great success.”
