Consultation events bring ‘people power’ to local communities

03 September 2016

Residents in Aberdeen today (03 September) discussed the future of their neighbourhood with leading officers from organisations across the city.

At the first of a series of events being held across Aberdeen, residents of Northfield, Middlefield, Cummings Park, Heathryfold and Mastrick gathered to shape the priorities for their community during roundtable discussions.

Future events, organised by Aberdeen City Council and Community Planning Aberdeen, will take place in Torry and in St Machar where residents of Tillydrone, Seaton and Woodside will also have the opportunity to present their views.

A cash injection of £150,000 is available to support the priorities which were identified during these events and through participatory budgeting; residents will be offered the opportunity to decide how the money is spent.

Voting on the ideas put forward will take place in March 2017.

Aberdeen City Council Leader and Chair of Community Planning Aberdeen Board Councillor Jenny Laing said: “It is important that we work in partnership with our residents and empower communities to form positive destinations, particularly for the younger generations.

“We recognise that our residents face challenges such as access to health, education and employment. But with every challenge comes opportunity and by working closely with local people we are confident that we will identify new ideas for improving communities and ensuring people have the chance to flourish - no matter where they live in Aberdeen.

“I hope that as many residents as possible can make it along to our community events and I look forward to hearing the discussions that take place at the next two.”

The next two community events which are to be held in September and October are:

Torry

Saturday 17 September, 9.30am – 1pm

Torry Academy

Tillydrone, Seaton and Woodside

Saturday 8 October, 9.30am – 1pm

St Machar Academy

On the day, there will be a discussion about the city vision - ‘a place where all people can prosper’ - and what this means for the local area. There will also be workshops structured around the themes of our people, our place, our economy and our technology.
