Contract awarded for demolition works as part of major transport improvements

A multi-million pound scheme to upgrade the city’s road network today reached a new milestone as a contract was awarded for demolition works.

As part of the £26.4milllion Berryden Improvement Scheme, properties at 78A and 86-90 Powis Terrace will be demolished to alleviate increasing traffic congestion around the city.

Aberdeen City Council’s Communities, Housing and Infrastructure Committee have awarded the contract to David Smith Contractors Ltd who will remove and dispose of asbestos containing materials and asbestos contamination and demolish the existing buildings superstructure and sub-structure. The contract also involves site clearance and preparation.

Aberdeen City Council's Regeneration and Transport spokesman Councillor Ross Grant said: “This is another development in the £26.4million Berryden Corridor Improvement Scheme.

“The programme will benefit motorists, cyclists and pedestrians and will be a major upgrade to the roads network in the area and for the whole of the city.

“The scheme is an important part of the city’s transport infrastructure. Without further improvement, there is a risk of increased congestion in the immediate and surrounding area.

“The project is aims to maintain and improve the range of transport choices available to, from and within the city.”

The Berryden Improvement Scheme is one of several major infrastructure projects worth a total of £560million which are integral to the city’s transformation.

These include the Diamond Bridge the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (AWPR), and the A96 Dyce Park and Choose and Airport Link Road.
