Council announces Year of Young People Creative Funding recipients

Aberdeen’s Year of Young People Creative Funding recipients were announced and unveiled yesterday at the Lemon Tree arts centre (Wednesday 13 June).
The successful applicants for the Aberdeen City Council £100,000 funding initiative will be able to realise their creative projects in the fields of music, drama and other areas of the arts to help celebrate Year of Young People 2018.
15 youth organisations and 5 individuals received a total of £84,202.00 in funding having been chosen a by a panel including the city’s Youth Ambassadors.
Councillor Lesley Dunbar, Vice Convener for Education Operational Delivery, said: “We have had a phenomenal response to our £100,000 Year of Young People Creative Fund and we had, in fact, a total of 30 applications for funding support totalling £133, 000.
“We are delighted to be able to support 20 of those projects who were successful in their applications. Importantly, it was our young people themselves who were instrumental in choosing the successful projects which will benefit from £84,000 of funding.
Organisation and individuals expressed their joy at receiving funding. Jessica Barrie, who received funding for ‘Good Feelings Only’, an art exhibition to promote what is good about the city, said: “This award will supply me with the support to realise ideas into something tangible. That is a very exciting prospect which has encouraged me to keep developing my work and to apply for more projects.”

Nicola Whyte, Community and Learning Engagement Coordinator at the Belmont Filmhouse which is looking to develop its Young Programmer initiative, said: “This award will allow us to offer Aberdeen’s young people the opportunity to be part of this exciting new project – to inspire young audiences with a programme of films and events designed for them and by them.”
The remaining budget will be allocated through ‘Year of Young People ’commission grants awards which will allow young people between the ages of 16 – 25 who reside in Aberdeen City can apply for funding up to £2,000 to create five new artistic works.
£5,500 is also to be allocated towards a Year of Young People showcase event highlighting local talent and provide an opportunity for communities to come together and celebrate their achievements and develop new opportunities. This event will be co-designed `in partnership with the Youth Ambassadors.
