22 July 2020

Aberdeen City Council is poised to successfully manage further easing of Covid-19 lockdown restrictions it was announced today (Wednesday 22 July).

With the country three quarters of the way through the four phased Scottish Government roadmap for the easing of restrictions, Aberdeen City Council Co-leaders, Jenny Laing and Douglas Lumsden praised the Local Authority’s handling of the pandemic response so far, and looked forward to the safe and successful implementation of Phase Four measures.

These are expected to include holding indoor and outdoor events, mass gatherings and ceremonies all in line with safety guidance as well as further guidance on the reopening of schools in August.

Councillor Lumsden said: “The preparation we have undertaken and the measures we have already implemented including our support for local businesses via our bold Socio- Economic Rescue Plan mean we are in the best possible place for post- Phase Four recovery.

“We look forward to helping achieve an even greater feeling of normality and give the people of Aberdeen reassurance that they can go about their everyday lives with some degree of confidence.”

Councillor Jenny Laing said: “As we progress towards Phase Four of lockdown easing I think it’s important to reflect on how far we have come in a relatively short space of time since Covid-19 first began to impact on Aberdeen.”

“The fact that we are so well-prepared to meet the challenges of protecting the wellbeing of the people of Aberdeen while re-energising the city is a testament to the hard work that has gone on behind the scenes at the Council.”

“We know we are certainly not out of the woods yet but with the actions we have already taken and the measures we will be putting in place over the coming weeks, we are in the best possible position to ensure our city will thrive once more”.

It is anticipated that Scotland will enter Phase 4 on 30 July.
