Councillors praise work aimed at supporting young learners

03 June 2021

Aberdeen City Council today (Thursday 3 June) praised the continued efforts made by Education Services in supporting young learners across the city.

A report on the progress of the Supporting Learners Workstream was discussed at today’s Education Operational Delivery Committee.

The Workstream has allowed Education Services to identify and measure areas of need, including challenging family circumstances, language barriers, emotional issues, autism and mental health needs in addition to providing support to others who have made contact.

The Supporting Learners Workstream will also allow for the provision of extra support for pupils with additional needs in mainstream settings from August 2021. This will help avoid isolating individuals in specialist settings.

Councillor M Taqueer Malik, Aberdeen City Council’s Education Operational Delivery Convener, said: “We are committed to ensuring that all of our children and young people have access to the best possible education. To help make this happen we need to be able to provide specialised support to those who need it most.

“My thanks go out to all the officers in Education and our partners for their hard work so far in progressing this important workstream.”

Councillors instructed the Chief Education Officer/Programme Manager to provide a further report on the programme at a future committee.
