Cults pupils beat the traffic with walking bus initiative
04 March 2019
Pupils at Cults School and their parents are using a safe, traffic-beating, healthy option to get to school, a walking bus.
The walking buses, which sees adults accompany their children on foot as part of a group, began last week and was devised by parents as a means of reducing congestion around the school and making for a safer journey for the pupils.
Parent Council Chair, Katrina Stewart, who has been involved in the project since it was first suggested, said: “Last week was the first week of its operation and the children who have joined up are really enjoying it. It's created a real buzz and more and more parents are enquiring about it every day.
“We are really hopeful that it will have a positive effect on car usage around the school”.
There are two walking routes in place – one commencing at Abbotshall Drive, the other at Hillview Drive - both with stops at which to pick up pupils and parents.
Councillor John Wheeler, Education Operational Delivery Convener, said: “This is a great initiative from the Cults parents and pupils as well as being a great example of the community partnership working Aberdeen City Council fully supports. I hope the initiative will go from strength to strength as we go through the school year”.
