Extension of contract offers career opportunities for council staff
07 June 2018
An extension to an existing contact, which will see new apprenticeships and training opportunities for Aberdeen City Council staff, has received the backing of councillors today (Thursday 07 June).
Members of the Council’s Strategic Commissioning Committee have approved a two year extension to the existing contract with Gas Call for gas serving and maintenance of domestic boilers in council houses, which will see substantial savings for the Council.
The two year extension will see Gas Call provide training to upskill the Council’s existing in-house gas heating engineers via the contractor’s own Logic Accredited Training Centre. This means the Council employees will become fully qualified ACS accredited gas service and reactive maintenance engineers.
In addition to the upskilling of in-house resources, the contactor will also provide modern-day apprenticeships for two local persons with the Council having the option of being involved in the selection process.
By adopting this approach the Council aims to address the local resource issue by ensuring that there are suitably qualified local gas engineers available to deliver this service provision in Aberdeen.
Aberdeen City Council’s Co-Leader Councillor Jenny Laing said: “There are a number of significant benefits to extending our contract with Gas Call. Our continued partnership will enable us to offer Council staff working in our heating service the opportunity to gain industry standard training.
“By bolstering the Council’s own workforce during the two year extension, it will be a stronger position to move the majority of reactive repairs to the Council’s in-house team.
“By extending our contract with Gas Call we will be able to offer new apprenticeships and this aligns with the Council’s commitment to provide work and education opportunities for our young people.
“We will, thanks to our positive working relationship with Gas Call see significant savings for the Council going forward.”
