Family fun day sees the opening of Aberdeen Treasure Hub

Council Leader Jenny Laing officially opened Aberdeen’s multi-million pounds Treasure Hub at a family fun day launch on Saturday.

The local Northfield community – which named the facility at Granitehill Road – turned up to celebrate the opening and take part in a series of fun activities including puppet making, games, seeing and handling birds of prey, face painting, meeting a Police Scotland dog and even handling some of the objects that form part of the Treasure Hub collection.

The family fun events related to the opening exhibition entitled Creature Creations, a showcase of animal-themed objects and artworks from the city’s collections.

Aberdeen Treasure Hub is designed to be a collections store facility, which includes a public exhibition and activity space. It will be a focal point for increasing opportunities for people to engage with arts and culture, and a venue in its own right for the community, city and wider region.

Leader of Aberdeen City Council Councillor Jenny Laing said: “It was great to see so many people from the local community turn up to the opening, despite the cold weather.

“Everyone enjoyed the activities and seeing at first hand the new landmark in the heart of Northfield. This is a major investment in the area and people have responded positively not just today but in the naming process and other engagement activities. I’m sure they are feeling justly proud at seeing the Treasure Hub formally open”.

As well as taking part in the day’s activities Councillor Laing and Councillor Angela Taylor, Education and Children’s Services Committee Convener, were given a tour of the Treasure Hub which will eventually be home to some 200,000 objects including paintings and historic artefacts.
