Father’s Day fun and flings at Aberdeen’s Highland Games

15 June 2017

Large crowds are expected to attend Aberdeen's Highland Games at Hazlehead Park from 10am until 5.30pm this Sunday (18 June) which coincides with Father’s Day.

The city's annual Highland Games are always popular with local residents and visitors alike with a fabulous mix of traditional events, entertainment and activities for all the family to enjoy.

Now in its 57th year, spectators will see all the traditional events including heavy events, solo piping and pipe band competitions, drum major competitions, track and field events, highland dancing and Scottish tug-o-war championship, 725kg.

Children and grown-ups alike will enjoy the live stage show ‘Highland Fling!’ by Funbox. Join Anya, Kevin and Gary, the former stars of the Singing Kettle as they bring their mad cap humour and singalong silliness to Aberdeen for this truly Scottish family show. Don’t miss one of these performances, which last 40 minutes, at 11.30am and 3pm, with a chance to meet the actors afterwards.

Re-enactors from Medieval Realm will be on hand to show the public some of their living history displays and people can try out some of the arms and armour.

Segways, giant inflatables, birds of prey from 2 Wit 2 Woo, climbing wall, face painting and walkabout balloon modellers are all included in the entrance price plus free wi-fi will be available for the first time allowing everyone to share their photos with their friends online. There will also be charity and trade stalls to browse, food and drink available to purchase, a beer tent (over 18s only) and a fun fair.

Find out about the 11 events which form Aberdeen Festivals, including the most recent addition the Scottish Traditional Boat Festival. Take part in workshops and their explore sessions with lots to see, do and experience throughout the day. There will also be live music at the Scottish Culture and Traditions stall who are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year.

The Lord Provost of Aberdeen Councillor Barney Crocket commented: ‘I’m really looking forward to attending my first Aberdeen Highland Games in my new role, seeing the traditional piping, dancing and events which are at its heart.

‘As it takes place on Father’s Day it’ll be great to see different generations enjoying the events which form part of the region’s rich history and heritage.’
