Foster Care Fortnight 2018

Aberdeen City Council’s Alternative Family Care Team is currently linking in with The Fostering Network’s national campaign to highlight the need for more foster carers. We have to recognise the positive difference that foster care can make when children and young people are unable to remain with their birth families. Unfortunately, we do not have enough foster carers to meet the needs of the number of children that are referred to us and so we are often in the position of having to look out with Aberdeen which can add to the loss experienced by children and young people and their families.

We know from working closely with foster carers that they have often been considering fostering for quite some time and wish they had contacted us sooner. We would add that some of the myths around fostering are easily answered; you don’t need to be married or in a relationship and we welcome applicants from the LGBT community. We would ask that you are in settled accommodation but don’t need to be a home owner, a spare room is essential however. We have carers who have their own children and some that do not. We provide a financial package, ongoing support and training so you are part of a team caring for a child.

Throughout the year we run Information evenings which provide an opportunity to meet other foster carers and staff, over the next Fortnight there will be an event  be at Deeside Christian Fellowship in Milltimber on Wednesday 16 May between 6 and 7.30pm and we will also have a stall at the Gay Pride Village on Saturday 26 May.
