Groundwork laid for COVID-19 recovery

07 July 2020

COUNCIL leaders said today [Tuesday July 7] that Aberdeen was well placed to emerge safely and successfully from the COVID-19 lockdown.

On Thursday [July 9], the country is set to enter Phase 3 of the Scottish Government’s route map for the easing of restrictions.

This is expected to bring a further relaxation of rules around personal movement – whilst maintaining physical distancing – as well as updates on the reopening of schools in August.

Council Co-Leader Councillor Douglas Lumsden said: “We have been able to respond quickly to the opportunities presented by the route map because we have prepared for recovery.

“We recently approved a Socio-Economic Rescue Plan aimed at supporting local businesses and we are working in partnership to deliver it, which will include capitalising on the move to Phases 3 and 4.”

Council Co-Leader Councillor Jenny Laing added: “A combination of hard work, foresight and incisive decision-making has allowed Aberdeen to lead the way in responding to the route map.

“Our Spaces for People project was one of the first in Scotland and has reinvigorated the city centre by promoting safe movement. I am enormously proud of our efforts to date and of the role the public has played in helping us move forward as a city.”

Scotland entered Phase 1 on May 28th, Phase 2 on June 18th, and is set to enter Phase 4 on July 30th.

Details of the Council's response to the route map will continue to be shared on our website.
