HMS Diamond docks in Aberdeen for community and Remembrance Day events

HMS Diamond – one of the Royal Navy's newest ships – has arrived in its twin city Aberdeen today (Fri 06 Nov) for a four-day visit to engage with the community and to mark Remembrance Sunday.

The Lord Provost and Lord-Lieutenant of Aberdeen George Adam said: "We are very proud of our maritime and military history in Aberdeen and are thrilled that the ship is making a return visit to the city.

"It is particularly fitting to have HMS Diamond with us at this time of year when all our thoughts are with the men and women of our Armed Forces. I've no doubt that the people of Aberdeen will give the Commander and crew a very warm and enthusiastic welcome."

Diamond's captain, Commander Marcus Hember said: "I am delighted to be bringing HMS Diamond back to Aberdeen for her first port visit since her major capability upgrade.

"Our visit not only reaffirms our special relationship with the city but is especially important during this month of remembrance for those who have defended the freedom of Britain and the Commonwealth.

"We look forward to welcoming visitors on board for a tour of one of the most advanced warships in the world."

HMS Diamond's busy weekend programme kicks off almost immediately as the Commanding Officer formally calls on the Lord Provost of Aberdeen before hosting a lunch for a range of Aberdeen affiliates.

On Saturday (07 Nov) HMS Diamond will open to the public from 10am to 3pm at Clipper Quay, York Street. Her crew members will be on hand to guide visitors around her decks, chatting to them about the role of the Type 45 Destroyer at the heart of the Royal Navy, as well as their experiences in the Senior Service protecting the nation's interests – at home and further afield.

Access is free and will be from Clipper Quay's York Street Gate (AB11 5DN) which will open at 9.30am and will close at 3pm ahead of the last entry to the ship at 3.30pm.

Parking is limited and visitors are encouraged to arrive on foot or use public transport (No15 bus). Large numbers of visitors are anticipated and cold weather is expected so warm clothing is advised.

On Remembrance Sunday (08 Nov) members of the Ship's Company, together with the Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines Scotland, will lead the Aberdeen parade.

The parade will step off from outside Marischal College at 10.25am marching from Broad Street to the Schoolhill war memorial where a service of Remembrance will be held from 10.50am.

HMS Diamond is due to leave Aberdeen late morning next Tuesday 10 November.
