Harlaw pupils scoop first prize for their energy sector knowledge
19 December 2016
Harlaw Academy was awarded for winning the prestigious Northsound 1 Energy Schools Challenge in a special ceremony today (Monday 19 December)
The ceremony recognised the efforts of the pupils - Ilyas Ahriz (age 14) S3, Luisa Rourke (14) S4, Colin Logan (16) S5, David Howard (17) S6 - who took part in the quiz tournament and came out on top in the final on 2 November.
Established in 1997, the Northsound 1 Energy Schools Challenge, in association with the Energy Institute, provides school pupils from across Aberdeen City and Shire with the opportunity to showcase their general knowledge and gain an insight into the oil and gas industry.
Secondary pupils in year’s three to six compete in teams of four for the chance to win the competition which was aired on Northsound 1 on Sunday afternoons with the exciting finale broadcast yesterday. The initiative also enables school pupils to look at the oil and gas industry as a viable career option.
Councillor Angela Taylor, Education and Children’s Services Committee Convener, said: “I understand that the competition was particularly keen this year so many congratulations to the Harlaw pupils for their efforts in what is a great initiative. David Innes, his staff and pupils should be feeling very proud today”
David Innes, Head Teacher at Harlaw Academy said: “We have had a long association with the Northsound Energy Challenge and win or lose we always enjoy taking part. In recent years we have had a fair bit of success and this is the third time we have been overall winners. As well as congratulating our team I wish to acknowledge the very high standard of all the teams this year. I also want to thank all of the sponsors, particularly the Energy Institute, OPITO, Northsound and all of the companies who host the various heats”.
