Hundreds of people get help preparing for winter

Hundreds of people found out how to get ready for winter at a safety event held in Aberdeen city centre yesterday.
Young and old alike got to see at a road gritter and a cycleways gritter for themselves, as well as find out useful information about road safety, gritting in Aberdeen, environmental health, recycling, community salt bags scheme, and cycle safety.
Members of the City Warden team were also there along with the Scoop the Dog mascot to give advice on keeping communities safe and tidy.
Aberdeen City Council Leader Councillor Jenny Laing said: “It was good so many people came along to get some advice and information as events such as this are vital to help keep our communities safe during the colder months.
“Many people might not realise our gritters are out and about before they’re even awake - most of the vehicles are back at the depot before most residents leave their homes – so it’s great that people can see the gritters for themselves and they’re always popular with youngsters.
“We’d urge people to look out our website, listen to local radio and also follow Police Scotland on social media for roads safety advice, to get information which will help them to enjoy a safer winter.”
The event, which was held on the St Nicholas Street pedestrian area outside Marks and Spencer, also had representatives from Red Cross and SCARF Heating and Energy to further help people stay safe this winter.
The Red Cross gave advice on how to party safely and how to look after elderly relatives and neighbours during the cold weather, and SCARF provided information on reducing fuel bills and creating a warmer, more efficient living environment.
