Jobs fair hailed resounding success

More than 1,000 job seekers attended the Progress Through Positive Partnerships jobs fair.

The Town House event, organised by the Department for Work and Pensions and Aberdeen City Council, saw 31 employers promoting more than 400 vacancies to 1,081 job seekers this week.

Job opportunities from a wide range of sectors, including retail, hospitality, oil and gas, care, local government, security, engineering, and sport were on offer. Hiring employers included Halliburton, BT Openreach, TK Maxx, Premier Inn, Petrofac, Aldi, First, Marks and Spence, Fugro, Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre, Argos, Stewart Milne Group, and Brewdog.

Co-leader of Aberdeen City Council Councillor Douglas Lumsden, said: “Aberdeen City Council is delighted that the Progress Through Positive Partnerships jobs fair was a success and hope those who attended found it of benefit.

“It is too early yet to say how many people have been offered interviews or who may secure jobs as a result of attending the fair, but the feedback we’ve received from employers has been overwhelming positive and we are confident that significant numbers of people will get into work as a result.

“By hosting events such as these with DWP, the Progress Through Positive Partnerships project invests in people by connecting employers with job hunters, helping businesses to fill their skills gaps while also giving people an opportunity to secure paid employment.

“As well as delivering jobs fairs, the employability project also provides support and training to individuals to help them develop the skills they need to get into employment, and supports them to seek, apply for and secure jobs, work experience, or further education.”

Progress Through Positive Partnerships sees Aberdeen City Council work alongside a range of training and development organisations to provide increased employability services and positive outcomes across the city. It will improve the co-ordination of service provision and ensure that those in need of it receive local support tailored specifically to address their individual needs and develop employment and vocational skills.

Progress Through Positive Partnerships is a £2.2million project, which has secured £880,000 (40%) from the European Social Fund. Participants will benefit from a wide range of training options in areas including engineering skills, welding, care, computing skills, one to one support, CV building, job seeking skills, interview skills, literacy, numeracy and language support, media skills, cookery and outdoor pursuits.
