Kirking of the Council to take place on Sunday

The beginning of the new session of Aberdeen City Council will be celebrated in the city this Sunday (21 May) with the Kirking of the Council and Service of Dedication to the Common Weal.

Newly appointed Lord Provost, Barney Crockett, will lead a civic procession of Councillors and city representatives from the Town House to the Kirk of St Nicholas Uniting for a service led by the Rev Stephen Taylor.

This traditional event will be the Lord Provost’s first civic engagement in the city with the Service of Dedication to the Common Weal providing an opportunity for attendees to affirm their commitment to the wellbeing of the city and its citizens. The service is open to the public and all are welcome to attend.

The Lord Provost said “It’s important to continue this tradition where the whole Council comes together to attend our Mither Kirk and to mark the start of a new session. It’s a very public demonstration of our commitment to serving the citizens of Aberdeen.”

Union Street will be closed to traffic from Marischal Street to Union Terrace at 10.30am and 12 noon to allow the procession to make its way safely to and from the Kirk. The right turn onto Union Street from the taxi rank on Back Wynd will be maintained.
