Lord Provost contributes to international webinar on green transition

22 June 2020

The Lord Provost of Aberdeen Barney Crockett who is also the President of the World Energy Cities Partnership (WECP), has taken part in an international webinar about green recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Clean Conversations Webinar, Clean procurement: International cities engaging cleantech solutions was organised by the Solar Impulse Foundation and International CleanTech Network. It explored green recovery after Covid-19, the role of cities in green growth and how the private sector can champion green transition.

Following the success of the first solar flight around the world, Bertrand Piccard and the Solar Impulse Foundation launched the second phase of their action: selecting #1000solutions that can protect the environment in a profitable way, and bringing them to decision makers to help them adopt more ambitious environmental targets and energy policies.

The International CleanTech Network (ICN) is an exclusive network of cleantech clusters –companies, public authorities, and research institutions that are on the international forefront of sustainable energy and environmental industries, and collectively provide innovative technologies to meet the growing global demand for green technologies and sustainable solutions. Their shared aims are to generate new business opportunities, enhance competitive advantages and create value for companies, knowledge institutions and local authorities across cluster regions.

The webinar moderator, Denis Leclerc, President and CEO of Ecotech Québec highlighted the importance of cities in the energy transition with more than half of the world’s population living in cities – a figure that is projected to rise to 60% in the next 10 years. It is a major pressure as well as an opportunity for cities, which account for 63% of energy consumption and at least 70% of GHG emissions, to lead the energy transition.

The Lord Provost of Aberdeen Barney Crockett said “It was a great opportunity to participate in the webinar and to showcase the work Aberdeen has being doing on energy transition. Aberdeen is recognised as a global energy hub and by sharing our knowledge and experience through key relationships internationally we can lead by example while also learning from other cleantech cities.

“This is why the WECP is so important as it connects leading energy cities on all continents that are committed to fostering the transition to a more sustainable energy future for the benefit of all of us.”
