Lord Provost cuts a dash with Walker Road School dancers
27 February 2018
Aberdeen’s Lord Provost Barney Crockett yesterday (Monday 27 February) showed that not only is he the man for the big civic occasion but that he can shake a leg with the best of them when he joined Walker Road School Dancers for an impromptu jig.
The Lord Provost joined the Torry school’s young dancing groups to see their skills at first hand but was invited to join in and show off his own fine footwork.
The Lord Provost said: “It was a pleasure to come along and an honour to join in with such fabulous dancers who do so much for the Torry community.
“In lending their services voluntarily the children have not only been a much-loved fixture in community events over the last few years but have showcased their talents to celebrate the youth of Aberdeen.”
The Walker Road Dancers comprise two non-profit dance clubs of 84 children at the school who are taught by Pupil Support Assistants Angela Sadler and Fiona Brown.
Starting four years ago the dancers have lent their talents to numerous local events including the Lighthouse Festival, Celebrate Aberdeen, Trinity Centre Christmas Parade as well as Burns Suppers at various care homes.
The dancers’ participation in 2016 in the UDecide Torry event saw them receive £3000 in local community funding which was used to purchase costumes, footwear and portable music speakers.
The Walker Road team are hoping to secure funding this year for a project which would offer the chance to develop a dance club for all under 16s in the Torry community.
Ms Sadler said: “We are really proud of what the pupils have achieved and how well they have progressed with their dancing. They thoroughly enjoy showing and celebrating their talents at all the events where we can promote them.
“We have seen the children blossom in confidence due to learning dance. This has also aided them with their confidence, co-ordination, strength, mood enhancement, inclusion, teamwork, friendship building, loyalty, commitment, discipline, health, fitness and the knowledge of learning a life skill.”
