Motorists asked to be patient at the start of Offshore Europe 2015

Motorists in Aberdeen are being asked to be patient over the next few days as roads will be much busier than normal with the start of Offshore Europe 2015 and also a football match on 8 Sept

Thousands of delegates and visits are in the city for the start of the four-day long event which is Europe's biggest oil and gas exhibition. Thousands of football fans are also expected at the Aberdeen FC v Viking Stavanger match at Pittodrie, which has a 7.30pm kick-off and free entry.

The football match is being held as a friendly and is to help foster strong links between the two cities.

Temporary traffic restrictions are already in place in the Bridge of Don area near the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre to assist traffic flow throughout the city. A traffic order has been put in place from 6am on 5 September to 6pm on 12 September.

Aberdeen City Council Communities, Housing and Infrastructure convener Councillor Neil Cooney said: "Even with the temporary traffic restrictions put in place, the roads near the AECC will be busier than normal so we'd ask motorists to be patient for the next few days.

"It is likely to be extremely busy on the first day and also with the football match in the evening, although people attending the conference shouldn't feel they have to leave early.

"People going to the football match are advised to factor in extra time for their journey, above what they'd normally expect due to the increased traffic.

"We would advise motorists to avoid the Bridge of Don area if possible and find an alternative route. We'd also ask people who are attending the conference, that they should use public transport.

"This is a major event for Aberdeen and we hope everyone enjoys their stay in our beautiful city."
