New members sought for disability partnership

Members of Aberdeen City Council’s Disability Equity Partnership (DEP) came together for a civic reception at the Town House yesterday (Wednesday 21 February).
Aberdeen City Councillor Lesley Dunbar, who is a member of the DEP, represented the Lord Provost of Aberdeen at the civic reception.
The Partnership exists to bring about improvements to the lives of people in Aberdeen who experience exclusion because of their disability, by promoting a rights based approach to disability equality.
The membership comprises approximately 15 members of the public, who are either disabled themselves, or have experience of working with disability and five local councillors.
The DEP’s vision is to:
create a society where disabled people are valued, respected and included in the life of the city;
encourage and promote inclusion and equality;
create a level playing field by identifying and removing the disabling barriers that disabled people face on a daily basis including prejudice, discrimination and negative attitudes.
The partnership believes that disabled people have a right to be considered and will strive to create a positive culture so that they are empowered and their views are taken into account.
The partnership is committed to equality and taking a rights-based approach, developing positive relationships with all sectors and will work in a way that is:
participatory, inclusive and empowering;
open and transparent;
respectful and courteous;
flexible and accountable.
Councillor Lesley Dunbar said: “The Disability Equity Partnership is very keen to establish strong links with the wider community and it is hoped that a forum comprising of voices and opinions from across Aberdeen will emerge to help influence the future work of the DEP.
“I would encourage anyone who would like to get involved or find out more about the DEP to get in touch with us.”
