New orienteering course for the Duthie Park
15 November 2016
If you like treasure hunts, nature and the outdoors then you will love the brand new orienteering courses at Duthie Park.
Aberdeen City Council, in collaboration with Grampian Orienteers, has created two orienteering maps for the historic park. A short course of 1km and a longer trail of 1.9km will take orienteers round the 44 acre space and take in all of its historical features.
Councillor Jean Morrison, vice-convener of Aberdeen City Council’s Communities, Housing and Infrastructure Committee, said: “Orienteering is a fun activity for everyone from families to youth groups and individuals. Duthie Park is an excellent location for these new courses, filled with historical landmarks and beautiful plants and flowers.
“Orienteering is an excellent all-year-round activity and is especially great for children who love exploring. It may also help regular visitors to the park notice features that they didn’t know about, or simply take visitors on a different route for their usual walk or jog.”
Adrian Will, Chairman of Grampian Orienteers, said: “Our club has been delighted to help the Council to re-establish the course and hope that it will help to encourage more people to participate in orienteering. Anyone who enjoys the experience will be made most welcome at our club events.”
The maps are available from the David Welch Winter Gardens at Duthie Park and on the Aberdeen City Council website. Large groups wishing to participate in the orienteering course should contact park office on 01224 585310.
