Picnickers in parks asked to be aware of potential of branch drop in dry weather

13 July 2018

Picnickers to Aberdeen’s parks are being asked to be aware of the potential of branches dropping due to the current warm dry spell of weather.

People should be considering the possibility of the branches falling when they seek shade under trees.

Two trees in Hazlehead Park in the west of the city have had major boughs falling recently, including one from a sweet chestnut earlier this week.

Warning signs are to be erected in the major parks around the city.

The phenomenon is known as ‘summer branch drop’ when trees shed their branches as they struggle to absorb water up through their roots.
