Plans for Broad Street traffic management get final go ahead

Councillors today approved plans to make Broad Street more pedestrian friendly following statutory consultation.

In June, Aberdeen City Council voted to establish a bus, cyclist pedestrian only route on Broad Street in line with the strategic aims of the City Centre Masterplan.

Following a 28-day statutory advertising period carried out as part of the Traffic Regulation Order, during which one objection was received, the Communities, Housing and Infrastructure Committee decided once again to push ahead with the plans.

Aberdeen City Council Deputy Leader Councillor Marie Boulton said: “Our decision to part-pedestrianise Broad Street is key to the overall ambitions of the City Centre Masterplan. The aim is to provide more public realm space in the city for events and cultural activities while developing our road networks, which can help to drive new development and economic opportunities for Aberdeen.

“Today’s decision is another step forward in Aberdeen’s transformation and a positive change for residents and the business community.”

The Broad Street proposal is one of four major transport projects contained in the City Centre Masterplan. Unanimously approved by Council in June 2015, it outlines 49 economic, infrastructure, environmental and community projects to transform the city centre over the next 25 years.
