Prized new playpark for city

A fantastic new playpark has been built in the city community of Powis thanks to the efforts of the local community, St Machar Rotary Club, and Aberdeen City Council.

The new play area, which has proved popular with local children already, has been a partnership effort and the equipment has been built so youngsters can get enjoyment out of it in the school summer holidays.

The community started the project which cost £17,000 to purchase and install the play equipment. It raised £3,780 after many months of hard work and fundraising, the St Machar Rotary Club generously donated £10,000, and ACC covered the costs of the final outstanding amount.

Aberdeen City Council operational delivery convener Councillor Philip Bell said: “We are absolutely delighted the new installation of the joint community project in Powis Crescent is finished.

“This has been fantastic combined effort by everyone involved to get new playpark designed and completed and we hope the youngsters in the Powis community and nearby have lots of fun with it.”

Alan Pirie, from St Machar Rotary Club, said: “We have worked with PCC over the past four years on various projects but this is the biggest so far.

“We thought that with lockdown in place and our opportunities to hold events to raise funds that the playpark might have to be scaled back, however it was great working with the ACC team and we are grateful that they have made it happen to the full extent that was planned originally. 

Fiona Lindsay, from Powis Community Centre, said: “Our local residents did an amazing job doing all the fundraising in lockdown and we are also very grateful for the financial support from St Machar Rotary Club.

“It has been a great partnership and we are really pleased with the final outcome for the local community.

“The children from Powis and other local communities have had a great time already in the new playpark and we all hope there’s more warm and sunny weather to come this summer yet for even more fun.”
