Proposals to be set out for Primary Education in Tillydrone and Old Aberdeen

Aberdeen City Council yesterday (Thursday 6 October) agreed to prepare a proposal document that will set out the options for a public consultation on Primary Education in Tillydrone and Old Aberdeen and the provision of additional Early Education services.

The Proposal Document will focus on the provision of Primary Education at Riverbank School and St Peter’s School and will set out the options for public consultation. These being:

the creation of a new shared campus which includes a new St Peter’s School, a new non-denominational primary school and an early education and childcare facility on the site of the former St Machar School / former Tillydrone School site the relocation of St Peter’s School into the existing Riverbank School building and the creation of a new three stream non-denominational school with early education and childcare provision on the site of the former St Machar School / former Tillydrone School site

Angela Taylor, Convener of the Education and Children’s Services Committee at Aberdeen City Council said: “A public consultation will help us take the right decision in meeting the needs of parents and children to secure the best site and provision of expanded of Primary Education in Tillydrone and Old Aberdeen.

“We also have the potential to create 200 new nursery school places. These are needed to meet the expanded early year’s learning and childcare services target which every Scottish local authority has to meet in 2020”.

The inclusion of additional early education and childcare facilities will help Aberdeen City Council meet proposed national plans to increase the current 600 hours provision for all three and four olds, and the 15% of two year olds currently provided by Scottish local authorities to 1140 hours by 2020.

The consultation commences on 24 October and will last until 9 December 2016. A consultation report will follow in preparation for a special meeting of the Education and Children’s Services committee in February 2017.
