Public encouraged to leave the car at home and a enjoy a day of fun

14 September 2017

In Town Without My Car Day (ITWMCD) returns to Aberdeen on Sunday 17 September, 10am – 4pm.

As part of European Mobility Week, ITWMCD will see Belmont Street, Little Belmont Street and Union Street (from Union Terrace to Back Wynd) closed to traffic and the space filled with activities to promote sustainable transport and to encourage people to enjoy the traffic free space.

Aberdeen City Lord Provost Barney Crockett said: “By working together we can all ‘do our bit’ to help promote sustainable living.

“We can do this by continuing to look at new and innovative ways to foster sustainable and active modes of transport including cycling, walking, public transport and responsible car use, which is why as Lord Provost I am delighted that Aberdeen is playing an active role in CIVITAS PORTIS, EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK and Climate Week 2017.

“With a huge selection of informative and fun activities on offer for all ages and abilities the ‘In Town Without My Car Day’ is the ideal opportunity to prove that sharing is more enjoyable and kinder to the environment.”

Visitors to In Town Without My Car Day will be entertained by the CLAN Stunt Team, as seen at the Tour Series in May, as well as by a host of fun activities including Meltdown; the 8 player action game, which challenges your stamina, agility and reactions by getting players to jump and duck over spinning booms.

Also, remember the chaos of Hungry Hippos? Visitors will have the chance to play it for real, with the hilarious and highly competitive dash and grab game.

There will also be the Adventure Aberdeen Bike Roadshow, climbing wall, and a smoothie bike to name just a few of the exciting activities visitors will experience on the day.

But the main message of the day will not be missed with GetAbout, Co-Wheels, Air Quality officers, and Home Energy Scotland on hand to provide advice on travelling more sustainably and encouraging alternative transport solutions.

Since 2002 European Mobility Week has sought to influence mobility and urban transport issues, as well as improve health and quality of life for everyone by exploring solutions to urban challenges, such as air pollution. This year’s theme is “sharing gets you further” and promotes the benefits that sharing transport and space can bring.

In Town Without Your Car Day and European Mobility week are supported by the GetAbout partnership which includes Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Councils plus NESTRANS, NHS, Energy Saving Trust, RGU, University of Aberdeen and NESCOL, and aims to promote sustainable transport in the North East of Scotland.

In Town Without My Car Day is free to attend and everyone is welcome.
