Public vote to be held to choose the final name for a new community hub

A public vote is to be held to help choose the name for a new multi-service community hub in Tillydrone.

The £6million new facility is being built on Hayton Road and potential names which have been suggested by local residents have now been shortlisted and these are (in alphabetical order) Hayton Campus, The Hayton Centre, and Tillydrone Community Campus.

An open day is being held on Saturday 3 November to gather the views of residents on services and groups they would like to see operating in the hub, and it also marks the start of the vote which will run until 26 November. People can cast their vote from at Tillydrone Community Flat, Tillydrone Housing Office and Tillydrone Library on online from 3 November at https://consultation.aberdeencity.gov.uk/communities-housing-and-infrastructure/name-the-hub/.

The chosen name is due to be revealed to a meeting of the operational group on 29 November.

Aberdeen City Council Co-Leader Councillor Jenny Laing said: “It’s so exciting to see how close we are to finishing this fantastic new facility and helping to chose the name will be the icing on the cake for the local community.

“The Tillydrone community hub will perform an important role in the area by providing support and improve the quality of life for many residents, and it will also be a centre for fun and learning.

“The new community hub is one of several transformational events for Tillydrone which are designed to help regenerate the area to show it is a great place to live and work, including a new school and additional affordable housing.

“The plans have come together after years of partnership working on the hub and I’m sure everyone is excited to see the final part of the build phase along with the official name being announced soon.”

The new community hub will bring together a range of services including existing community organisations, council services for housing tenants and priority families outreach.

In addition to providing vital services to those most in need, the community hub will also include a library, crèche, cafe, business start-up unit and activity halls for fitness and recreation.

Aberdeen City Council has committed £4.1million towards the complex, while a further £1.9m grant has been received from the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grant Fund.

Work on the hub is expected to be complete by the end of the year and open to the public in early 2019.
