Recruitment event to help city’s young people Moving On to career paths

A youth recruitment event aimed at helping young people make informed choices about their future career path will take place later this month.
Apprenticeship and other job opportunities will be on offer at the event, with representatives of the hiring organisations on hand to discuss the posts available. Training providers across a range of disciplines will also promote learning opportunities and how to access them.
The Moving On event, run by Aberdeen City Council in partnership with Skills Development Scotland, invites Aberdeen’s young people aged 15 to 25, including recent and upcoming school leavers, to learn about the employment, training and higher education opportunities available in the area.
A number of local and national organisations have signed up to attend the event. They will provide guidance on apprenticeship opportunities and entry level positions, as well as offering advice to those not yet ready to leave school. Parents and guardians are welcome and encouraged to attend.
A wide range of opportunities is available, including: hairdressing, gardening, plumbing, joinery and electrician apprenticeships; trainee Openreach engineers; personal trainers; catering; hospitality; and childcare roles; as well as positions in the armed forces.
Exhibitors include BT, JD Wetherspoons, Codonas, British Army, Royal Navy, RAF, Tullos Training, SHMU, Aberdeen Foyer, CITB, Pure Gym, VSA, Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeenshire Council, Aberlour Futures, Ship Safe Training Group, and NESCOL.
The Progress Through Positive Partnerships employability project team will also be on hand to sign up young people seeking additional support to help them into work. Aberdeen City Council Co-Leader and Convener of the City Growth and Resources Committee Councillor Doulas Lumsden said “I would like to encourage any young person from Aberdeen who is seeking work or looking for advice about their next steps to come to Moving On.
“In previous years Moving On has been aimed at school leavers and those about to leave school, but this year we have opened it up to young people aged up to 25, who may be seeking a job or advice about training opportunities available in the city.
“Organisations at the event will offer guidance on what is undoubtedly a major life decision. With advice on career path options, training and employment opportunities, Moving On event recognises each has an important role to play in supporting and developing our city’s growing talent pool.”
A spokesperson from Skills Development Scotland said “We’re looking forward to helping young people find out more about the Apprenticeship Family which include Foundation, Modern and Graduate Apprenticeship and other training and work opportunities. We would encourage people to bring copies of their CVs to give to employers who have opportunities for people at entry level and above. Young people still in school can get help from their SDS Careers Advisers and those who have left school can get support from their local SDS Centre, where they can get help with CV building and other employability skills. The drop-in event is being held in the Town House, Broad Street, on Thursday 29 March from 12.30pm to 7pm. The first half hour will be a quiet session specifically for people with additional support needs.
