Rededication of plaque for Aberdonians who fought in Spanish Civil War

27 January 2020

A rededication service for the memorial plaque for the XV International Brigade plaque was held at the Music Hall on Saturday 25 January.

The plaque is dedicated to the 19 men who left Aberdeen to join the International Brigade to fight fascism in the Spanish Civil War (July 1936-April 1939). Of the 19, five were killed in the war and buried on the battlefields of Spain.

The Lord Provost of Aberdeen Barney Crockett and Councillor Jenny Laing, Co-Leader of Aberdeen City Council attended the ceremony along with members of the International Brigade Memorial Trust and relatives of those who had taken part in the fight against fascism.

The flag is a replica of the one that was used as a shroud for the Aberdeen volunteers who were killed in action during the campaign.

The plaque had previously been displayed in the Music Hall but was temporarily moved during the recent renovation work.
