Relaunch for city swimming pool
27 September 2019
An Aberdeen swimming pool is to undergo a multi-million million transformation that will deliver a new fitness suite and family changing area amongst other enhancements.
The refurbishment of Northfield Swimming Pool will include new flooring and re-tiling, the replacement of fixture and fittings and new suspended ceilings, as well as additional car and cycle parking.
The facility – which is owned by Aberdeen City Council and operated by Sport Aberdeen – was built in 1996 but closed in March 2018 after major equipment failures.
As part of the revamp, significant elements of the mechanical and electrical plant will be replaced.
The Council’s City Growth and Resources Committee today agreed a business case which includes a significant investment from Sport Aberdeen.
A report from officers said investing in the 25-metre pool would help meet goals set out in Community Planning Aberdeen’s Local Outcome Improvement Plan as well as the city’s “Strategy for an Active Aberdeen”.
Officers had assessed a range of options, which also considered the impact on commercial performance.
The pool’s appeal was described as having been limited by the lack of dry activity space. The plan includes adding a 60-station fitness suite, a multi-purpose studio, group changing and family changing.
The pool is expected to reopen in Summer 2021.
