Renowned pianist to perform at Lunchbreak concert

17 January 2016

A free lunchbreak concert by internationally renowned pianist Susan Tomes will take place at 12.45pm on Thursday 21 January at Aberdeen Citadel, Castle Street.

The Cowdray Hall's popular weekly Lunchbreak Concerts have been temporarily relocated to the Citadel while the hall is closed until winter 2017, as part of Aberdeen Art Gallery's £30m redevelopment project 'Inspiring Art and Music'.

Born in Edinburgh, Susan has won a number of international awards as a performer and recording artist, and in 2013 she received the Cobbett Medal for distinguished service to chamber music.

Her career encompasses solo, duo and chamber playing; she has been at the heart of the internationally-admired ensembles Domus, the Gaudier Ensemble, and the Florestan Trio, winners of the Royal Philharmonic Society Award in 2000.

Thursday's concert will see Susan perform music by Haydn, Debussy and Billy Mayerl.

The series, which is programmed by Artists Advisor Dr Roger B Williams MBE, includes popular artists, and introduces musical stars of tomorrow, all of whom will entertain concert-goers on their lunchbreaks.

Deputy Leader of Aberdeen City Council Councillor Marie Boulton said: "It's great that while Aberdeen Art Gallery and Cowdray Hall are closed as part of a major redevelopment we continue to offer a programme of art and music to residents and visitors to the city, and indeed across the UK and abroad.

"No other city in Scotland hosts a free admission programme such as ours, which invites both amateur and professional musicians to perform. The programme brings high calibre national and international artistes to the city while providing an important performance platform for local musicians, including music students and school pupils."

Dr Roger B Williams MBE, Artists Advisor, said: "This is the first time that Susan Tomes has been part of the Lunchbreak series, and we are delighted to have such a distinguished musician as part of the season."

The concerts are free but donations are welcome. All donations go directly towards supporting the performances and ensuring the continuation of the Lunchbreak programme.
