Residents urged to self-help for flooding

09 November 2017

Residents are being urged to self-help to prepare for flooding by applying for a grant to help protect their property.

People living in vulnerable properties will be able to apply for a grant of up to a maximum of 50% of the installation cost, capped to £2,500 per property, as agreed by members of the City Council’s communities, housing and infrastructure committee today.

A report to committee said the move would allow the City Council to assist about 60 vulnerable properties during each year of the scheme – and a total of 300 over the five year period of the scheme.

Aberdeen City Council flooding spokesperson Councillor Jennifer Stewart said: “Everyone can play their part in looking after their own property as well as their community.

“I have seen the impact of flooding around the city – at places including Queen’s Cross, Cults, Westburn, and South Deeside Road - and it is a sad situation for residents and businesses alike especially when it happens at times such as Christmas Eve.

“We would encourage residents to apply to the scheme as the more they can do to protect their properties, the better.”

The report to committee said there are properties within the city which experience flooding, some on a regular basis, for which there is no prospect of a ‘permanent’ solution in the short to medium term.

Encouraging residents to protect their own properties will help to reducd overall flood risk in Aberdeen, meet the objectives of the local flood risk management plan, and assist those areas and communities most at risk of flooding.
