Rob Roy Bridge to remain open for Banchory Show

Reconstruction work on Rob Roy Bridge has been rearranged to minimise traffic congestion during the Banchory Show, Aberdeen City Council announced today.

Work costing £530,000 is starting on the structure on Monday (Monday 27 June 2016) and it had been scheduled for a full closure on the weekend of the show, which takes place on Saturday 30 July.

To minimise traffic congestion, Aberdeen City Council officers in conjunction with the contractors have arranged for some of the work to be rescheduled so one lane on the bridge can be kept open on the day of the show.

On that weekend, the full closure will only take place from 7pm on Friday 29 July until 6am on Saturday 30 July.

An Aberdeen City Council spokeswoman said: “Motorists should note that there will still be a single lane closure with traffic lights in operation, it might still be advisable to find an alternate route if you are planning to attend the show.”

The reconstruction works are required to safeguard the future structural stability of the bridge and will take 26 weeks to complete.

The original masonry arch is circa 1800 and the arch beam/column north section is circa 1920.

The works involve the demolition of the reinforced concrete section of the bridge, which will be rebuilt to modern standards. During the whole of the contract, there will be traffic lights in operation.

There will also be occasional full road closures - limited to weekends only - to allow the safe installation and removal of the aqueduct protection system and demolition plant.

Emergency vehicles will be able to cross under supervision when the bridge is officially closed and pedestrians will be allowed across at all times for access to, for example, the restaurant.

The signed diversion route will be via the B9077 South Deeside Road.
