School pupils are WEEE winners

14 January 2016

More than 200 items of Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) were collected from 14 participating primary schools in the city last month as part of the 'Green Santa' recycling and reuse campaign run by Aberdeen City Council's Recycling Team. About 40% of the items collected were suitable for re-use, with the remainder being recycled to recover the high value components.

Mile End pupils won a laptop for their school after collecting more than 130 items including printers, laptops and mobile phones.
The runners up were Hazlewood School, Holy Family Primary School, Woodside School, and Cults Primary who received various prizes including a tablet for the school and Amazon vouchers.

The prizes were donated by the council's campaign partners, local company Enscape and re-use specialists Re-Tek.
Aberdeen City Council Communities, Housing and Infrastructure vice convener, Councillor Gordon Graham, presented the prizes to the winning schools at a ceremony today [Friday].He said: "It is fantastic that so many electrical items have been collected for re-use. Well done to all the students, teachers and parents involved.

"Their great efforts have helped to prevent hundreds of electrical items being thrown away in landfill. Instead, these items can now be passed on to benefit other people, or recycled so that the materials can be transformed into new items."

Members of the public who wish to pass on electrical items for reuse can donate them to local charities, contact the National re-use phone-line on 0800 0665 820 to organise a collection, or advertise them for sale or free online at Gumtree, Freecycle or eBay.

Electrical items that are not suitable for reuse can be recycled at any of the five Household Waste Recycling Centres in Aberdeen.
