School pupils invited to come up with green answers

School children in Aberdeen are poised to help lead the green revolution as Scotland gears up for an international climate change event.

Aberdeen City Council’s Education Operational Delivery Committee unanimously agreed to invite youngsters to be part of discussions about making their environment even greener.

The committee agreed that schools would explore “new initiatives and ideas” in the coming months as the country prepares for COP26 in Glasgow in November.

Education officers have been asked to bring back a report to committee in January for consideration.

Committee convener Councillor M. Taqueer Malik said: “Given our on-going work to become a child-friendly city, it is important that we put young people at the heart of decision-making – and that’s what this initiative does.

“Many of our children are passionate about the environment and will fully embrace the opportunity to be part of global endeavour.

“As it is, a number of pupil-led committees already help make change happen at a local level to reduce the school carbon footprint."
