Talented young musicians showcase their skills
20 September 2016
A gala performance by members of the Aberdeen City Youth Orchestra and wind ensemble provided a colourful climax to a three-day masterclass.
Aberdeen City Council’s music service, the University of Aberdeen and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra collaborated to deliver a series of workshops as part of the BBC Ten Pieces project.
Running from Friday to Sunday (16-18 September), the sessions brought together hundreds of youngsters from schools across Aberdeen.
In addition to taking part in rehearsals, pupils were given the opportunity to compose new pieces of music and performed those as part of a concert hosted by the University of Aberdeen at Elphinstone Hall on Sunday (18 September).
Aberdeen City Council Education and Children’s Service Committee Deputy Convener Councillor Scott Carle said: “We are incredibly proud of the very talented and dedicated young musicians we have in Aberdeen and this has been a fantastic opportunity for them.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the concert and it provided a great event to demonstrate the hard work put in by all involved over the three days of the project and every pupil deserves great praise.
“The Aberdeen City Council music service does fantastic work across our schools to support young people and collaborations such as this are a wonderful way of harnessing the passion and commitment we see in our pupils.”
The weekend concert was filmed by the BBC and will be broadcast as part of the Ten Pieces project.
